- Hot Spanish summers are no longer a problem at this school thanks to evaporative cooling
Evaporative coolers on the roof of this school in Seville in the southern part of Spain ensure a pleasant indoor climate for students and teachers – even during the scorching Spanish summers. Evaporative cooling is a cost-efficient alternative to air conditioning and an energy-efficient solution that supports both comfort and sustainability.
Upgrading classroom climate control with European Union funding and a low environmental impact
As part of a European Union-funded initiative to modernise public educational facilities, the school undertook a classroom climate control upgrade. The goal was to ensure a healthy, comfortable environment for pupils and staff while keeping energy consumption in check. A specific requirement of the funding was that the solution should have the smallest possible environmental impact.
The challenge: Soaring energy costs during Spain’s hot summers.
The school faced considerable challenges in maintaining a comfortable indoor climate, particularly during the hot months. Soaring energy costs and the need for a reliable, efficient climate control solution that could integrate into the existing infrastructure were key concerns.
The solution: Ingenious evaporative cooling
To address this, Dantherm Group supplied 14 BIOCOOL units tailored to the classrooms’ needs. On average, one unit provides a comfortable indoor environment for three classrooms.
The installation was straightforward, requiring minimal adaptation to the existing building.
The BIOCOOL solution consists of an outdoor unit, typically placed on the roof, and an indoor diffuser. As warm air passes through damp cooling pads, heat is absorbed through natural evaporation, resulting in a drop in temperature. The diffused indoor airstream can be between 4 °C and 20 °C cooler than the ambient air. The hotter the weather, the more effective the cooling process.
To further ensure hygiene, the system includes ozone treatment, which eliminates all bacteria in standing water.
Remote control
The remote control, Smart City Cooler, is the most advanced control system for evaporative cooling, enabling the operator to optimise the performance on many different parameters.
Via PC, tablet, or smartphone operators can get access to real-time diagnostics, automated temperature and humidity settings, error detection and detailed historical data recording. They can also get remote technical support, which significantly reduces maintenance time and costs. Integration with BMS or PLC via Modbus TCP/IP ensures full customisation to user needs.
Evaporative cooling is particularly effective for schools with large spaces and high occupancy where the costs for traditional air conditioning can easily spiral out of control.

What is evaporative cooling?
Evaporative cooling harnesses the natural process of water evaporation to cool air, providing an energy-efficient alternative to traditional air conditioning.
Key benefits:
- Low energy consumption – uses up to 90% less energy than traditional AC
- Fresh air circulation – 100% outdoor air replaces stale indoor air
- Cost-effective – savings of up to 80% on cooling bills
- Environmentally friendly – ideal for sustainability-focused projects
- Humidity control – helps maintain healthy moisture levels
- Highly effective in large spaces – perfect for classrooms, halls, and open-plan facilities
