By harnessing the ambient temperatures outside of a data centre or telecom shelter, a cool air flow is supplied at low speed to the bottom of the room. This forces the warmer air towards the ceiling, and creates a cushion of cool air for electronic devices to safely reside. The warm air is then extracted outside through a damper.

This approach to producing cooling energy offers several advantages over traditional air-conditioning:

• By removing the need for a compressor, free cooling greatly reduces energy consumption, and can lead to energy savings anywhere up to 90%

• With no use of refrigerant gases, these units are also more eco-friendly than air-conditioning systems
